Please join us for the 2nd annual Shotokan Classic, a traditional karate tournament open to all practitioners of traditional Japanese or Okinawan karate.

Last year's event brought together instructors, coaches, and competitors from all over the mid-west; Minnesota, South Dakota, Chicago, and friends from as far away as New York!
This year we are expecting an even bigger turn-out.

We will once again feature quality training and competition, with training seminars Friday evening and Saturday morning, followed by spirited competition the remainder of the day.

The Lost Techniques of Shotokan Kata

Have you ever felt like something is missing from your kata application?  Something is...

In 1922 Master Funakoshi published his first book, Ryukyu Kenpo Karate (re-published as Karate Jutsu).  In it he discusses the "soft" side of karate, similar to Ju-Jutsu, and illustrates several throwing techniques, all of which he describes as applications in various kata.

What happened to them?

The answer to this question, and many more, can be found in these two exciting seminars conducted by Sensei Paul Lopresti.

Mr. Lopresti will discuss the principals behind the rediscovery of these techniques and teach many of these hidden applications.  In addition to the traditional striking, hitting, and kicking techniques, he will demonstrate strangulation, throwing, takedown, and submission techniques, without deviating from the precise movements of the kata.

These seminars are a must for anyone who seeks to understand traditional karate!

*Due to the nature of many of the techniques, which can stress joints, bones, and muscle tissue, the seminars are restricted to students sixteen (16) and older.  Separate youth  seminars will be offered for those under sixteen.

About The Instructor:

Paul Lopresti began training in 1977. He is a 5th dan, and a graduate of the Scientific Karate Institute International’s instructor program, which is offered in affiliation with the Long Island University. He is the technical director for Shotokan Karate-jutsu, chairman of research and development for the USA Shotokan Karate Federation, and is also a certified instructor for Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu.

With over 30 years of experience, his education in Health and Physical Education and his ongoing research into the practical application of modern kata have made him a highly sought after international instructor. His seminars are full of insightful and practical kata applications, covering a variety of subjects including strangulation, throwing, takedowns, and submissions; techniques all hidden within Shotokan kata.
